How to compare home care providers
Your funding is close, so now’s a good time to choose who you’ll trust with your care.
Here are some things worth asking every provider you speak to.
Get all eight questions in our free factsheet that you can take into every conversation.
Ask what happens after hours
Life doesn’t stop at 5 pm. Ask who you can contact if something comes up outside office hours, and what the process is.
Check how you’ll reach them
Call centres can slow things down and lead to mix-ups. Ask if you’ll get direct phone access to your care manager and team.
Ask who’ll actually visit you
Some providers send a different carer each time.
Ask whether they use their own support staff or agency staff, so you’ll see familiar faces.
Understand what you’ll pay
Under Support at Home, most people contribute to their care. Get clear about your service options, and what fees you might have to pay.
My Aged Care also have a contributions estimator, which you can view here.

Support at Home wait times: common questions
How long is the wait for home care under Support at Home?
Support at Home wait times depend mainly on the priority category shown in your assessment outcome letter.
My Aged Care estimated around 1 month for urgent and high priority, about 5–6 months for medium priority and 7–8 months for standard priority. These are estimates, not guaranteed dates, and they’re updated regularly, use the estimator above for the latest picture.
Why do home care wait times vary so much?
Home care wait times vary because Support at Home isn’t a first-come, first-served queue.
Funding is released through a national Priority System based on your priority category (urgent, high, medium or standard), your funding classification and the date you were approved.
So two people approved on the same day can wait very different lengths of time. Published figures also show waits differ between regions.
How does the Support at Home wait time estimator work?
The estimator uses the details you enter, such as your priority category, classification level and location, to show roughly how long you may wait for home care funding.
It’s based on the latest published government wait time data. You’ll find your priority category and classification in your assessment outcome letter or your My Aged Care online account.
How accurate is this estimator?
The tool uses publicly available data to give you an estimate of when you can expect your funding, but it's not a guarantee.
Home care wait times change as government funding is released and demand rises or falls, and your own circumstances can change too.
What can I do while waiting for Support at Home funding?
You don’t have to go without help in the meantime. Ask My Aged Care whether entry-level Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP) services, such as domestic help or meals, are available in your area.
We can also connect you with support while you wait, including our helpful email content about free support, and our Bridging Care Program.
What should I do if my needs change while I’m waiting?
Contact My Aged Care on 1800 200 422 as soon as possible. If your needs have increased, for example, after a fall or a hospital stay, you may be able to have a support plan review or a reassessment, which could change your classification.
It’s best to report changes in health or mobility early rather than waiting for a crisis.
How can I get started with you?
We're always here to help. Whether you've just received your funding or want to learn more about our Bridging Care Program, head to our contact us page to get in touch.
